Lagos partners more states, private sector to tackle food crisis
Lagos State Government has set to partner more states and private sector in the country
in boosting food production and supply in the state.
This is part of strategic measure aimed at combating the high food prices currently burdening the nation.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya disclosed this at a news conference held at the Kaltho Baguda Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, to enlighten residents on the initiatives introduced by the state government to ameliorate the current food crisis.
Ms Olusanya stated that Lagos State Government is planing to partner more states in the country and private sector in boosting food production and supply in the state.
That the state is also developing operational framework with states and private sector in areas like: Cassava produce with Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, rice with Niger, and maize with Kaduna, Adamawa, Plateau, among other states.
Olusanya advised Lagosians to embrace subsistence farming by growing different crops within their homes in order to reduce the high cost of food items in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food System also clarified that due process was followed in the distribution of food palliatives to Lagosians.
She said that various groups through which the food items were distributed submitted names of the beneficiaries to the ministry which in turn sent the lists to LASSRA for verification.
“We have also involved the Community Development Associations, CDAs for the distribution of the food items to ensure transparency,” Olusanya stated.
She assured that the state would ensure transparency in the distribution of the recently announced 20 trucks of rice by the Federal Government to states towards curbing the food crisis in the country whenever it arrives.
